Biocompatibility
Biocompatibility is one of the most important considerations in the design and manufacture of specimen collection swabs for human sampling because swabs are used for taking samples from a wide variety of sites on and inside the human body. They come into direct contact with sensitive mucous membranes like the nasopharynx, eye, throat, vagina, and exposed tissues in various wounds, including deep surgical wounds. Swabs are held in contact, rubbed or rolled against surfaces of the body for periods of time to collect secretions and cells. This direct contact of the swab device and its constituents with the human body, even if for a limited duration, means there is a potential risk of adverse reactions unless the swab is biocompatible. To ensure the highest degree of patient safety, Copan Flock Technologies’ team refers to the ISO 10993-1 Standard: Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices, which describes the suggested testing for product biocompatibility based upon the contact duration and level of invasiveness. This approach demonstrates Copan Flock Technologies total dedication to patient comfort and safety, as well as ingenious product design.
